Never mind the fact that every book on the market and every show on network television is encouraging you to go minimal—if you have funky collections and treasures you adore you can keep them around your place and still keep your home neat. Here are two great ways of balancing your things and your sanity:
1. Maintain a cleaning schedule
Nothing makes a collection look cluttered like work papers and library books mixed in and amongst your treasures. Part of the deal that comes with having lots of stuff is that you need to be more vigilant than a minimalist does about tidying. Tidy daily and be sure to return your things where they belong each time you come into a room.
2. Rotate your things out
Sometimes you simply have too much stuff to make any sort of decorating sense. If you find yourself unhappy with the amount of wall space required to properly display your things, consider storing a portion of your items out of sight. Closets, trunks and under-bed bins are great ideas to hide away pieces of your collection. When you need a refresh, rotate out the stored items and bask in your “new” displays.
